Salt and Sacrifice PvP Multiplayer Detailed in New Trailer

The new trailer for Salt and Sacrifice has been released! The trailer shows quite a few new features, such as the new Sacrifice and the new ability to create and name your own PvP teams. But the big new addition is the ability to loot and use weapons and armor from fallen players.

In Salt and Sacrifice, players take on the role of a mysterious traveler, bound for a mysterious destination. You’ll journey from village to village, trading, making friends, and fighting those that stand in your way. Along the way, your companions will fight threats on your behalf, and you’ll collect a variety of weapons and tools to help quell the threats on your journey.

Salt and Sacrifice will feature multiplayer aspects when it launches in Q1 2024 for PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. Ska Studios said that online cooperative multiplayer will be “drop-in, drop-out.” Details were few at the moment, however during the Future Game Show at Gamescom, the team revealed more information about the system, including its PvP features.

As a Marked Inquisitor, players must hunt out corrupt wizards in order to purify the Altarstone Kingdom’s territory. That was all we knew. It’s obvious now that other players will be able to either assist or hinder that effort.

The Shroud Alliance (PvP) and the Blueheart Runners were featured in a video that premiered at the Future Game Show, showing two of the groups that would offer assistance or “wreak chaos”: the Shroud Alliance (PvP) and the Blueheart Runners (PvEvP). It was also revealed that via a password system, gamers would be able to go through the full Salt & Sacrifice campaign with a partner.

The summoning candle is used to start multiplayer, and it can only be utilized by individuals who have atoned for their sins by eating a Guiltless Shard. Atonement, as Developer James Silva explains in the video above, enables players to call friends to battle AI foes, but it also invites the Shroud Alliance to invade.

It’s possible to auto-summon allies when invaded, similar to Dark Souls 3, assuming other players are wearing a “amulet of the Oathbound Watcher.” This system of invasion and protection seems more akin to what Soulslike veterans are used to, though it’s unclear if invaders under the Shroud Alliance will face AI enemies on their way to an Inquisitor.

Those that play as Blueheart Runners have a somewhat different job ahead of them, concentrating on PvEvP while battling other players and collecting Ashes of the Hazeburnt. The Hazeburnt are a “horde of zombie-like monsters that have succumbed to the Spellmark curse,” according to Silva.

The explanation is intriguing since it’s unclear whether the Hazeburnt are connected to the vanquished players’ shades in any manner (think a take on the bloodstain system in Dark Souls).

Slaying Hazeburnt, however, spawns Hazewraiths, who, according to Silva, would “chase your pursuers” by continuously entering and hunting other players. In this mode, up to four players (2v2) may battle at the same time.

Salt and Sacrifice, the follow-up to 2016’s Salt and Sanctuary, still has a lot of unknowns. Keep an eye out for more.
