The Carolina Panthers had a lot of success on offense in the first half, but were unable to score in the second half. They came back with a vengeance and ended up winning 20-17.
The dwayne haskins steelers is a game that the Carolina Panthers won. They did so by giving their opponents, the Pittsburgh Steelers, a lesson in tough.
In the aftermath of his team’s 34-9 preseason defeat to the host Carolina Panthers on Friday night, Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin didn’t mince words.
Despite starting mainly backups against the Panthers’ starters, the Steelers didn’t perform at the level he anticipated, and that was especially true of quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who was making his first start of the season.
“Like the rest of us, I didn’t believe varsity effort from him was sufficient,” Tomlin added. “It wasn’t the kind of performance he or us were hoping for. But that’s life.”
Haskins completed 9-of-16 passes for 108 yards, a touchdown, and an interception against a first-string defense for the first time in the preseason with a roster position on the line.
Even those figures, though, are deceptive. The Washington Football Team picked Haskins in the first round of the 2019 draft, although he only completed 3-of-9 attempts for 24 yards and an interception in the first half. In the first half, his passer rating was just 2.8.
“It was a difficult one,” Haskins said. “I wanted to improve my game. I’m sure we all aspired to perform better as a group. All you have to do now is watch a movie, prepare, and get ready.”
Haskins started the game by leading the team to two three-and-outs, completing his first two passes on third downs, but both of his throws fell far short of the sticks. Haskins’ next drive was cut short as he threw behind fullback Derek Watt. The ball bounced off Watt’s hands and into Panthers cornerback Brian Burns’ waiting arms.
In his last drives of the half, Haskins rebounded with more aggressive passes, pushing the ball down the field rather than checking it down. Ray-Ray McCloud, on the other hand, couldn’t complete the catch on a well-thrown ball twice. Haskins attempted a tight coverage throw, but it struck McCloud in the shoulder pad and he was unable to complete the catch. Haskins led McCloud down the sideline on the following drive and precisely put the ball in front of him. McCloud, on the other hand, was unable to complete the grab by keeping both feet in bounds.
Haskins led one drive to begin the third quarter, but it was also a three-and-out, so Josh Dobbs took over for the next four drives until he was injured on a sack in the fourth quarter.
Haskins was given a chance to redeem himself as a result of the injury. The first drive was cut short when running back Tony Brooks-James fumbled on the second play, but Haskins led the Steelers to a touchdown on the final series. At the two-minute warning, Haskins found McCloud for a 28-yard gain over the middle on third-and-5. He connected with Anthony Johnson for a 12-yard gain and tight end Marcus Baugh for 8 yards on the following two plays. He finished up the drive with a 22-yard touchdown pass to McCloud.
“I thought having the two-minute chance was excellent simply to gain some in-game experience with that, and of course, I wanted to start quickly, but we didn’t,” Haskins said. “Being able to finish in such a manner that we were able to have some kind of rally after was a nice way to end the game.”
Nonetheless, Tomlin was not thrilled by Haskins’ late scoring drive.
Tomlin said of Haskins, “I’m sure it worked for him in terms of getting that taste out of his mouth.” “Obviously, it had no impact or effect on the game’s result.”
With final cuts approaching, the quarterback room’s choice seems to be between Dobbs and Haskins for the last slot. Outside of Friday night’s performance, Haskins said he was pleased with his preseason work with the Steelers.
Haskins stated, “I feel like I’ve done a fantastic job simply proving that I’m coachable.” “I’m demonstrating that I want to learn and improve.” I’m just attempting to capture moments on video that will allow me to demonstrate my abilities. The first three games are something I’m really pleased of, and the way we began is something I’d want to improve on.
“The most I can hope for is that what I’ve done throughout preseason and training camp is enough of a body of work to display and demonstrate how much I’ve progressed.”
